Four Cities Attacked in August 1, 1945
中小都市空襲は昭和20年6月から終戦の前日まで続き、北は北海道から南は九州鹿児島まで日本全土にわたった。6月17日以降、Ｂ29が100〜150機に分かれ、本土の中小都市を２、３都市ずつしらみつぶしに爆撃するようになった。中小都市空襲の第13回として676機が出撃し、富山・長岡・水戸・八王子の四都市を同時に攻撃した。

アメリカ軍が日本本土に投下した爆弾・焼夷弾の総重量は16万1,425トンで、その内訳は6,740トン（海軍航空隊）、7,109トン（極東空軍）、14万7,576（在マリアナ第20空軍）で、その空襲は353回にわたり、延べ5万1,903機に及んだ。７月には各地に「日本国民に告ぐ」の題名で、リーフレットをまきながら都市や軍事施設を米空軍は爆撃した。

昭和20年8月1日、テニアン島より米軍第313爆撃飛行団が発進。日本本土空襲のためにマリアナ基地を飛び立った米軍の爆撃機Ｂ29は815機。長岡、水戸、八王子、富山の四都市が攻撃目標だった。この日の空襲は基地が保有する全機に出撃が命令され、「世界史上最大の空襲」と称されるほど大規模であった。これは、３月10日の東京大空襲を皮切りに、日本の都市を次々と焦土にした作戦を指揮した第20航空軍司令官カーチス・ルメイ少将の戦略航空軍司令部への栄転と、米陸軍航空隊創立記念日の祝賀とを兼ねた攻撃であった。（1988（昭和63）年7月28日の朝日新聞）

8月1日深夜、Ｂ29は水戸、富山、八王子、長岡をいっせいに空爆した。水戸市は午前零時前後に167機のＢ29が来襲し、約二時間焼夷弾の雨を浴びて1,535名の死傷者を出した。富山市でも三時間におよぶ174機のＢ29空襲を受けての死傷者の数は5,936名に上った。八王子市も一日深夜から二日未明の169機の空襲によって2,900名が死傷した。長岡には125機が来襲し死傷者1,490名を数えた。これらの焼夷弾による無差別爆撃によって、計12,000人の死者を出し、これらの四都市は、ほとんど壊滅した。この他にも福山、郡山、豊川が空襲の犠牲となった。
空襲の翌日の「ニューヨークタイムズ」は、１日の長岡・富山・水戸・八王子の四都市の爆撃に用いた爆弾の総量が、１回の空襲では世界最大であったと報じた。

日本国民に告ぐ

“LeMay bombing leaflet,”「ルメイ爆撃リーフレット」（サイズ：5 1/2" × 8 5/8"）

1945.8.1-9で500万枚もの「日本国民に告ぐ」リーフレットが33都市に投下された。日本の地方都市の軍事施設への爆撃を予告している。しかし、実際には軍事施設への爆撃ではなく、一般市民に対する無差別爆撃が実行されたのである。（無差別爆撃に対する日本政府の抗議に影響された文面と思われる。詳細は１０．１０那覇大空襲を参照）
また、リーフレットには広島・長崎への原爆投下予告は書かれていないが、この爆撃予告リーフレットにて原爆投下を日本市民に事前に知らしめたという、欺瞞に満ちた主張が米国内で広められていることに注意せねばならない。

「ルメイ爆撃リーフレット」

七月三十一日、Ｂ２９が焼夷弾を投下している写真とともに水戸、八王子、郡山、前橋、西宮、大津、舞鶴、富山、福山、久留米、高岡、長野の都市名を記したビラがばら撒かれた。その裏には「日本国民に告ぐ」と題して、以下の文章が記されていた。

「あなたは自分の親兄弟友達の命を助けようとは思ひませんか。助けたければこのビラをよく読んでください。
数日の内に裏面の都市の内全部若しくは若干の都市にある軍事施設を米空軍は爆撃します。
この都市には軍事施設や軍需品を製造する工場があります。軍部がこの勝目のない戦争を長引かせる為に使ふ兵器を米空軍は全部破壊します。けれども爆弾には眼がありませんからどこに落ちるか分かりません。御承知の様に人道主義のアメリカは罪のない人達を傷つけたくありません。ですから裏に書いてある都市から避難して下さい。
アメリカの敵はあなた方ではありません。あなた方を戦争に引っ張り込んでいる軍部こそ敵です。アメリカの考へている平和といふのはただ軍部の圧迫からあなた方を解放する事です。さうすればもっとよい新日本が出来上がるんです。戦争を止める様な新指導者を樹てて平和を回復したらどうですか。この裏に書いてある都市でなくても爆撃されるかも知れませんが少なくともこの裏に書いてある都市の内必ず全部若しくは若干は爆撃します。予め注意しておきますから裏に書いてある都市から避難して下さい」

Resume of Mission: Results were reported as unobserved to excellent. Later photo reconnaissance revealed that 80% of the target had been destroyed (1.2 sq. mile). Two numbered targets were damaged. Eight A/C were non-effective. Ninty- seven A/C bombed visually and 72 by radar. Forty to Fifty E/A sighted made 6 attacks. One B-29 was damaged. Flak was heavy, and light, meager and inaccurate. AA damaged 1 B-29. Two RCM and 2 Wind-Run A/C are not included in total A/B. Twelve A/C acted as Pathfinders. The A/C lost was due to unknown reasons. Thirty-six B-29s landed at Iwo Jima. Average bomb load: 17,840 lbs. Average fuel reserve: 629 gallons.

The target was sighted by 55 A/C and not seen by 118 A/C. E/A opposition was nil to weak. Five E/A sighted did not attack. Medium and heavy, nil to meager and inaccurate flak in target area damaged 1 A/C. Twelve A/C acted as Pathfinders. One Wind-Run A/C was not included in total A/B. Eight B-29s land- ed at Iwo Jima. Average bomb load: 16,094 lbs. Average fuel reserve: 757 gallons.

E/A opposition was weak to moderate and unaggressive. Forty to 50 E/A sighted made 5 attacks. Medium and light, nil to me- ager and inaccurate flak at Toyama. 116 - Mitsubishi Oil Refinery - 41% of storage tank capacity destroyed.
127 - Hayama Petroleum Center - 43% of storage tank capacity and 35% of intermediate tank capacity destroyed.
128 - Kawasaki Petroleum Center - 35% of storage capacity and 15% intermediate tank capacity destroyed.

Six A/C were non-effective. Flak was heavy, medium, meager to intense and accurate. Flak damaged 22 A/C. Thirty to 35 E/A made 9 attacks. No claims. One Wind-Run A/C is not included in the above total. Six A/C bombed visually and 114 bombed by radar. Seven B-29s landed at Iwo Jima. Average bomb load: 18,410 lbs. Average fuel reserve: 1,039 gallons.

富山大空襲

戦災後の富山市　荒町より西町方面を見る
1945（昭和20）年8月2日未明、米軍のＢ29爆撃機174機が富山市中心部に焼夷弾（しょういだん）約1,300トンを投下。当夜は満月で目標が定めやすく、晴天続きで乾燥していた上に、強い南風。投下された焼夷弾12,000個が効果的に市街を焼き尽くし、市街地は一夜のうちに廃虚と化した。市によると死者は2,700人以上、負傷者は約8,000人とされる。同時期、新潟県長岡市、茨城県水戸市、東京都八王子市の３市も空襲を受けた。
東京はじめ、多くの都市が空襲を受けた中で、比較的小さな富山が死傷率［人口１千人当たり死者16人(全国平均8.7人)、負傷者47人(全国平均13.3人)］・焼夷率［市街地爆撃目標区域の99.5%(全国一)］共に全国一であり、空襲のすさまじさは第一級と位置づけられる。

水戸空襲
マリアナ基地を飛び立った167機のB29のうち160機が房総半島から水戸に侵入した。水戸は1945年8月2日午前0時31分から2時16分までの1時間45分にわたり、160機のＢ29から投下された約1145トン（市民１人あたり約17キロ）のＭ47焼夷弾（100ポンド）、 Ｍ19焼夷弾（500ポンド）による空襲を受けた。空襲で市街地のほとんどが焦土と化した。
被災家屋10,104戸（全市の90％）、被災者50,605人（80％）、死者242人、重傷者144人、軽傷者1,149人で、その後、戦災誌を切っ掛けにした調査で、死者は300人を上回ることが確認された。

長岡空襲


Burned Area in NAGAOKA due to the Air Raid

1.78 square miles (4.62 km2) was burned out. 11,986 buildings were damaged. 9,329 of them were residential housings. US evaluation said that damaged area was 1.33 square miles, or 65.5% in percentage. But real damage was more severe than that.
On August 1, 1945, approximately 125 B29 bombers dropped 925 tons of fire bombs over Nagaoka for one hour and 40 minutes. The air raid turned most of the city into a deluge of fire. It claimed about 1,460 lives and nearly 60,000 people lost their homes.

昭和20年（1945年）8月1日の午後10時30分ころから翌2日の午前0時10分までのおよそ1時間40分間、テニアン島から離陸した第313航空団の125機のＢ29爆撃機による焼夷弾爆撃を受けた。
投下されたＭ19､Ｍ47集束焼夷弾は925トン、163,000発余りの焼夷弾が文字どおり豪雨のように降りそそぎ、長岡を焼き払った。
この空襲により、市街地の約80％が焼け野原となり、学童約300名を含む1,470余名の尊い生命が失われた。

  4. 第二波の状況　各々約百三十機を以て房総半島、相模湾より同時侵入、水戸附近及び八王子、立川に對し主として焼夷弾攻撃を実施せり
  5. 右攻撃により鶴見、川崎、水戸、八王子、立川、長岡の各都市に相當の被害を生じたり

八王子大空襲

８月２日

八王子大空襲は8月2日未明であった。180機のＢ29による間断ない焼夷弾攻撃を受け、八王子市街の8割を焼失し、死者500人以上、負傷者2,000人以上、罹災世帯12,700戸、罹災者数72,500人に及んだ。川口村では八王子市街に近い楢原、犬目などにかなりの被害が出たほか、山間部の上川口、山入などにも被害が出た。

1945年8月2日未明、Ｂ29による大空襲があり、八王子市街地の約５０％、戸数では82％を焼失。投下された爆弾焼夷弾は69,460といわれる。

空襲は昭和20年8月2日の午前０時すぎに始まった。180機の米軍爆撃機Ｂ29が突然八王子の町を襲った。
第一弾は万町（よろずちょう）の中山製麦所付近に焼夷弾が落とされ、少し遅くれて下長房（しもながふさ）にあった東京陸軍幼年学校に落とされた。八王子の中心部を取り巻くように次々に爆撃されていった。その後、まちの中心部にも焼夷弾が集中投下され、またたくまに全市に火が燃え広がった。空襲は約２時間近く続き、落とされたＭ50焼夷弾の量は1,600トンといわれている。



Ｍ50焼夷弾
重さ約1.6キログラム、長さ約54センチメートル、鋼鉄などでできていた。8月2日には約67万発が投下された。多くの建物が焼けただけでなく、この焼夷弾の直撃で亡くなった方も大勢いた。
